Manawatū Rugby will host to a celebration of local women’s and girls rugby, headlined by the finals of the X Grade and Prue Christie Cup
The Women’s and Girls’ Finals Festival will take place at Central Energy Trust Arena on Saturday July 6. As well as hosting the finals of the women’s competitions, the festival will feature games between teams from Manawatū Rugby’s junior grades.
The day will start with junior tackle teams playing on the back fields. These teams each feature a large female contingent.
This will be followed by the inaugural final of the Women’s X Grade 10-a-side competition. The X Grade was established this year to give women players an option to play in a level below the Prue Christie Cup.
Teams from the all-girls junior rippa grade will then play on the Arena 1 field. This is the first year Manawatū has run a girls- only rippa competition.
The day will conclude with the Prue Christie Cup final.
Manawatū Rugby's Women's premier competition was launched in 1991. The championship trophy was later re-named the Prue Christie Cup in honour of the former Manwatū Rugby Operations manager and Kia Toa club member whose work had a huge impact on the women's game in the province.
