The Manawatū Rugby Union are pleased to announce the appointment of The Manawatū Cyclones Head Coach – Chris Wilton.

Chris joins our union with a strong coaching history, most recently coaching Heartland Horowhenua Kapiti Rugby team and experience coaching womens rugby in Australia. Chris is currently Head of Rangatahi Ora, Te Reo Maori teacher and Maori dean at Horowhenua College.

Chris demonstrated a strong performance mindset and a proven history of created winning environments.

We had the chance to have a chat to Chris about his thoughts on the season ahead and how he’s feeling to be part of the team:

“I am inspired and determined to lift The Cyclones to the top of the FPC. I admire the skills and talent I have seen in the team and am looking forward to workingwith them and building on what they already have. Having a level of skill and talent in a team and pairing that with focus is where the magic will happen. I am just really excited.I am looking forward to bringing culture to the team in a meaningful way, through interaction of people of our whenua and each other. Bringing the team together through whanaungatanga. The team need to feel deeply connected and put their jerseys on as if they are going out to battle.”

What was Chris’s favourite rugby moment and who are his influences:

“Being presented the Lochore cup by Sir Brian Lochore for Heartland Horowhenua the last time ever was an honour and moment I will always remember. My major influences in rugby are Bruce Hemara and Sam Doyle. Sam and I played a lot together in our younger years, I learnt a lot from him. Bruce was myfirst senior rugby coach, and he has continued to mentor me throughout my rugby career.”

“It is a real privilege to be in this position, I am impressed with the work ethic, drive and talent that I have seen in The Manawatū Cyclones.”

Congratulations Chris, welcome to the Manawatū Rugby whānau! We are looking forward to having you on board!
